The Estonian short film compilation "Fire Under the Ashes" is set to premiere in cinemas on April 8, featuring five films from emerging directors including Katariina Aule, Anna Hints, Elisabeth Kužovnik, Silvia Lorenzi, and Tushar Prakash. The compilation showcases diverse stories that explore themes of love, loneliness, and human connection. Each film presents a unique narrative and perspective, contributing to the rich tapestry of contemporary Estonian cinema.
Silvia Lorenzi's film "Numbrituba" serves as the collection's opening piece, delving into the lives of characters grappling with their desires for love and connection. It tells the stories of Elena and Alex, who engage in a clandestine affair, as well as Aivar, who secretly dresses as a woman, and Jey Yin, who faces disillusionment after relocating to a foreign country with high expectations. The film has already garnered attention by premiering at the Cottbus Film Festival and being selected for the upcoming PÖFF Shorts program in 2025.
Elisabeth Kužovnik's "Stiina" highlights the struggles of a 28-year-old single mother, Stiina, whose 9-year-old daughter Emma often finds herself home alone. Unbeknownst to Stiina, Emma has an imaginary friend who provides her solace during lonely moments and comfort when she faces difficulties. The connection between Emma and her imaginary friend reveals deeper themes of childhood loneliness and the unseen struggles families navigate, further enriching the narrative of this compilation of short films.
