Lack of safety behind fatal accident at the freight yard

A train worker died due to safety shortcomings at Malmö's freight yard, as concluded by the Swedish Transport Agency's Accident Investigation Authority.

The Swedish Transport Agency's Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) has determined that a fatal train accident at Malmö's freight yard resulted from significant safety deficiencies. According to the lead investigator, Eva-Lotta Högberg, these shortcomings were evident throughout the process, from planning to execution. An important point highlighted was that the relevant track needed to be shut down to safely conduct work, yet it remained open at the time of the incident.

The tragic accident occurred in April of last year when two men, tasked with inspecting safety violations, were struck by a passenger train. The consequences were severe, with one man in his 25s losing his life and another in his 30s suffering serious injuries. This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols in railway operations, where the lives of workers are being put at risk due to lapses in standard operational procedures.

In light of these findings, SHK is recommending that the Swedish Transport Agency oversee how the Swedish Transport Administration manages risk control with its contracted contractors. This reflects a broader concern within the industry regarding the effectiveness of safety measures and the need for stringent regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
