Fifty-five percent of infants regularly spend time on mobile phones or watching television

A recent survey revealed that 55% of infants under 12 months in Czechia regularly engage with mobile devices or televisions, with recommendations from experts advising much less screen time for young children.

According to a survey conducted by the agency STEM and presented by the organizations Zvedni hlavu and Nadace O2, 55% of children under the age of 12 months regularly spend time using mobile phones, tablets, or watching television. The survey found that 41% of toddlers aged one to two years spend over an hour daily on these devices, while the percentage climbs to 68% among preschoolers. Such usage rates have raised concerns among child development experts about the appropriateness of screen time for young children.

Barbora Richtrová, chair of the Association of Clinical Speech Therapists, emphasizes that children under three should ideally have no screen time at all, advocating for the need for meaningful interactions with people and hands-on experiences in their lives. For children aged three to six years, she recommends limiting screen time to 40 minutes, with a focus on content that is calm, slow, and kind. She also suggests that parents should co-view content with their children and engage them in discussions afterwards to foster better understanding and interaction.

Furthermore, Kamil Kolman from the Zvedni hlavu organization points out that besides the amount of time spent on screens, the type of content is also critical. There is a notable difference between quality educational content and passive viewing; thus, parents are encouraged to select age-appropriate, beneficial media for their children to mitigate the risk of developing unhealthy habits as they grow older, particularly after the age of six when usage should ideally remain limited to one to two hours a day to avoid the increased risk of addiction.
