Jeff Bezos wants to save Earth from Armageddon

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin is partnering with NASA to address potentially hazardous asteroids.

Jeff Bezos' space company, Blue Origin, is collaborating with NASA to tackle the threat posed by asteroids that could potentially collide with Earth. This partnership involves researchers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to explore ways of integrating planetary defense capabilities into Blue Origin's existing space platform, known as Blue Ring. The initiative, termed the Near Earth Objects (NEO) Hunter, is based on multiple technologies aimed at detecting, deflecting, and removing asteroids that are on a collision course with Earth.

The Blue Ring is a modular satellite platform designed to support up to four tons of payload distributed across as many as 13 connection points. It is versatile in its operational capability, able to function in various environments from low Earth orbit to geostationary orbit, and even in the space between Earth and the Moon or during missions to Mars. The technology aims to provide a robust defense mechanism against potential asteroid threats to our planet.

Furthermore, the initiative seeks to use advanced approaches, including ion beam-based deflection methods, to ensure the safety and preservation of Earth against these cosmic threats. This collaboration underscores the increasing importance of planetary defense in light of growing concerns about asteroid impacts and highlights the vital role that private companies like Blue Origin play in conjunction with government agencies like NASA in safeguarding our planet's future.
