Kenya: Over 200 Kenyan Police Return Home From Haiti Mission
215 Kenyan police officers have returned home after supporting the Haitian National Police in restoring security amid a crisis in Haiti.
A total of 215 police officers from Kenya's second contingent of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission to Haiti have returned home after completing their deployment. This mission was crucial in supporting efforts to restore security in Haiti, particularly in aiding the Haitian National Police (HNP) in their struggle against heavily armed gangs that have taken control of significant areas in the capital. The Inspector General of Police accompanied the officers home, highlighting the importance of this mission in international security efforts.
The backdrop of this mission is Haiti's ongoing political and security crisis, with increasing violence and instability affecting daily life for many residents. The deployment of the Kenyan officers aimed to bolster the HNP, which has faced challenges in managing the levels of violence and gang activity across the country. Their involvement is part of a broader international response to the crisis, including future missions planned to stabilize the region.
Looking ahead, the responsibility for security in Haiti is transitioning to the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), a larger, UN-backed international mission set to deploy a robust force of 5,500 personnel. While the new mission, for which Kenya will play a leading role alongside contributions from other nations such as Chad, is expected to commence in late 2025, the gradual transition marks an ongoing international commitment to supporting Haiti's recovery and stability.
