Banking must accelerate its transition to digitalization
Moisés Chaves, president of Bankaool, emphasizes the need for Mexican banks to transition to digital systems amid various sector challenges.
During the 89th Banking Convention, Moisés Chaves, who is also the CEO of OMNi, highlighted the unique challenges facing the banking sector in Mexico but described the market as resilient and rewarding. He pointed out that while there are efforts within the financial system to promote digital banking, there are also significant barriers such as an ongoing reliance on cash and a lack of innovative alternatives that would enhance the digital ecosystem. This contradiction arises from a reluctance to embrace modernization in light of the changing realities of banking. Chaves noted that the extensive network of ATMs represents a substantial cost for traditional banks, which undermines their goals of reducing cash usage among the population. He argued for a necessary shift in priority among large banks to invest in digital banking solutions to better align with modern consumer needs and to thrive in an increasingly digital economy.
