Rats Caused Power Outage in Tampere

A power outage affecting around 5,500 residents in Tampere was caused by rats running over voltage equipment.

On Monday, a significant power outage impacted approximately 5,500 people in Tampere, Finland. According to reports from Aamulehti, the cause of this outage was traced to rats that had been scurrying across cable junction devices. This incident follows a similar disruption earlier in the winter where a rat was discovered in the same area. Efforts to mitigate the issue were unfortunately insufficient, prompting city officials to seek further solutions to deal with the rodent problem, as noted by Jouni Vanhanarkaus, operations manager at Tampere Energy.

The potential consequences of the rodent infestation are troubling, as not only do the rats lead to power outages, but they also likely perish as a result of their actions. After both power outages, dead rats have been found at the site, suggesting an alarming trend where rats have established themselves in the area and have evaded traps and poisoning attempts. The operations manager expressed that in his 20 years of working in the industry, he had never encountered a situation quite like this, indicating the severity of the problem.

Earlier reports from Ilta-Sanomat in February highlighted an unusual increase in rat populations in Tampere, with public health inspector Matti Naukkarinen warning that these rodents have been seeking food even within buildings. The combination of electrical outages, rat populations, and ineffective pest control measures underscores the pressing need for immediate action by local authorities to resolve the rodent issue and prevent future disruptions in the electrical supply for residents.
