7 shipment of cigarettes flown from Belarus intercepted on Tuesday
Lithuanian authorities intercepted 7 shipments of Belarusian cigarettes sent by balloon in various locations in Southern Lithuania, with a total of 12,500 packs seized.
On Tuesday, Lithuanian border guards and police intercepted seven shipments of cigarettes being illegally transported by balloons from Belarus. Each of the shipments was equipped with GPS devices, highlighting the efforts of contrabandists to evade detection. The total amount of seized goods reached approximately 12,500 packs of Belarusian cigarettes, raising concerns about the ongoing issue of cigarette smuggling across the border. As part of this operation, Lithuanian authorities have initiated a pre-trial investigation into the illegal possession of excise goods.
This year has seen 69 shipments brought down so far, with a monthly breakdown showing higher activity in the early months compared to last year. In January alone, there were 29 shipments intercepted, followed by 24 in February and 16 in March. Notably, this is an increase from last year's interceptions, where similar patterns were noted, emphasizing the persistent challenges that Lithuanian authorities face in combating cigarette smuggling from Belarus. Overall, border guards have confiscated over 196,000 packs of illegal cigarettes this year, shedding light on the scale of the smuggling operations.
Furthermore, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) reported that they have detained 28 individuals suspected of involvement with this aerial smuggling of contraband from Belarus. This ongoing situation not only highlights the ingenuity of smugglers using unconventional methods, such as balloons, but also the concerted efforts of Lithuanian authorities to clamp down on such activities. The rising number of interceptions indicates a growing problem that authorities are committed to addressing effectively, as evidenced by last year when 635 balloon shipments were reported.
