Hunting for Meteorological Balloons - from the Border Guards' Eurocopter

Lithuanian border guards intercepted seven shipments of contraband cigarettes transported by balloons from Belarus.

On Tuesday, Lithuanian border guards reported the interception of seven shipments of contraband cigarettes that were transported via meteorological balloons from Belarus. This coordinated operation involved both border guards and local police, focusing on various locations throughout Southern Lithuania. The shipments were equipped with GPS devices to track their movements, highlighting the innovative methods employed by smugglers to evade detection.

A total of 12,500 packets of Belarusian cigarettes were found in the custody of the State Border Guard Service, marking a significant interception in the ongoing efforts to combat smuggling. Authorities have indicated that an investigation is underway, led by a prosecutor from Kaunas District Prosecutor's Office. This year alone, there have been 69 similar shipments intercepted that were brought into Lithuania by balloon, indicating a troubling trend that highlights the persistence and resourcefulness of smugglers.

In comparison, over 196,000 packets of cigarettes have been seized by border guards this year, reflecting an increase in law enforcement's capacity to combat such contraband activities. Additionally, security forces have detained 28 individuals suspected of being involved in the aerial smuggling operations from Belarus. The rising numbers of interceptions and arrests indicate a determined response by Lithuanian authorities to curb the trafficking of illegal goods across its borders, especially as they approach policy implementations aiming to further secure their national territory.
