Thus, the high towers of the old Kirjalansalmi bridge collapsed in Parainen – pylons were taken down using a new method

The last steel components of the old Kirjalansalmi bridge in Parainen have been dismantled using a novel method that eliminated the need for explosives.

The old Kirjalansalmi bridge, located on the border between Paraisten and Kaarina in the Turku archipelago, has seen the completion of its dismantling process with the removal of its final steel components. The pylons that flanked the shores of the strait were taken down on Monday, utilizing a new approach that did not require explosives, a departure from the initial plan. Project manager Saramaria Cowell from the Väylävirasto stated in a press release that instead of cutting the suspension cables of the pylons using explosives, they implemented a new method that allowed for a safer and cleaner dismantling process.

The dismantling involved removing a bracing strap that connected the upper and lower parts of the pylons from three sides, succeeded by pulling the pylons down towards the shore using tow trucks. As the pylons collapsed, the suspension cables fell to a work platform, where they were subsequently cut and pulled ashore. This innovative technique not only optimized safety during the demolition process but also minimized potential environmental impact, showcasing advancements in construction and dismantling technologies.

All steel parts from the old bridge will be melted down to create new steel, and the concrete components will be crushed for reuse at the site, indicating a commitment to sustainable practices in infrastructure management. The successful demolition further paves the way for future developments in bridge construction in the area, reflecting modern construction methodologies that prioritize both efficiency and environmental responsibility.
