Europe Tightens Age Restrictions on Lottery Element Video Games
Europe has decided to impose stricter age restrictions on video games that contain loot boxes.
The European gaming regulator, PEGI, has announced new stricter age restrictions for video games that include loot boxes. These loot boxes, which contain purchasable rewards, can be bought using either virtual or real money, and this decision is aimed at better protecting young gamers from potential gambling-related issues. Starting this summer, games featuring loot boxes will receive a PEGI-16 rating, with some possibly classified as PEGI-18 based on the specific content and mechanics involved.
This decision was influenced by a comprehensive three-year study involving around 40,000 participants, which revealed alarming associations between playing games with loot boxes and the risk of developing gambling addictions. The report emphasized the need for increased regulation, as existing age ratings on games are not enforceable and often go unnoticed by parents who may not be well-versed in the gaming world.
As such, the new restrictions are expected to serve as a significant step toward safeguarding younger audiences from the potential risks associated with gambling behavior induced by video games. The implications of this decision could lead to wider industry changes, prompting developers to reconsider their monetization strategies and ensuring they comply with the new age rating guidelines.
