Three doctors deemed suicidal Leena unfit for work – Kela considers her suitable for truck driver duties
A truck driver named Leena faces distress and suicidal thoughts after years in the profession, yet Kela claims she is still fit for work as a truck driver.
Leena, a truck driver from Pirkanmaa, Finland, has reached a critical point after seven exhausting years in her profession, leading her to consider drug use to cope with her work challenges. Struggling with severe exhaustion, she has developed various psychological symptoms, including depression, insomnia, and memory issues, as well as suicidal thoughts. In a video testimony, she describes her personal struggles, highlighting the mental toll her job has taken on her well-being.
Three different doctors have evaluated Leena and determined that she is currently unfit for work, especially for the position of a combination vehicle driver, which demands accuracy and quick reflexes. One of the doctors, who provided a B statement to Kela, stated that a patient with suicidal thoughts is not suitable for driving heavy vehicles at all. Leena expresses her own agreement with this assessment, acknowledging her inability to operate such a heavy vehicle safely due to her mental health condition.
Despite the medical opinions regarding her lack of fitness for the job, Kela has controversially assessed that Leena is still fit to work as a truck driver, denying her eligibility for sickness benefits. This decision raises questions about Kela's criteria for assessing work capability and highlights the broader challenge of mental health issues in demanding professions, calling for a reevaluation of health and safety standards for workers with mental health challenges.
