NHK Chairman: 'A National Event Requires a Forum for Discussion' Regarding the WBC Without Terrestrial Broadcasting
NHK Chairman Inoue urged for discussions among stakeholders regarding the lack of terrestrial broadcasting for the World Baseball Classic (WBC), highlighting the need for accessible national sports events.
During a press conference, NHK Chairman Inoue Takahiko addressed the absence of terrestrial television coverage for the World Baseball Classic (WBC), emphasizing the necessity for a dialogue among stakeholders to ensure broad access to such important national events. He noted that with the exclusive broadcasting rights acquired by Netflix, this year's WBC marked the first time that there was no terrestrial television coverage, limiting public viewing options.
Inoue expressed concern over the skyrocketing broadcasting rights fees that hinder viewers from accessing significant sporting events, which, in turn, may impede the popularity and growth of these sports. He underscored the importance of establishing a platform for constructive discussions among stakeholders, including broadcasters, streaming companies, and sports organizations, to potentially devise solutions such as collaborative rights acquisition or a 'universal access' system.
Although Inoue clarified that he does not have a specific plan in place, he anticipates that such discussions will emerge from various organizations connected to sports events, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, broadcasters, and sports associations. He affirmed NHK's commitment to participate in these necessary discussions aimed at enhancing public access to important national sporting events.
