The calculator reveals whether you are buying something forbidden

A new feature in Finland's customs calculator informs users about any restrictions or prohibitions on ordering goods from outside the EU.

Finland's customs authority has introduced a significant update to its customs calculator, which now not only estimates customs and VAT charges for incoming goods but also alerts users to any restrictions or prohibitions associated with their purchases. This feature, implemented in February, is aimed at helping online shoppers ensure they abide by legal regulations when ordering items from outside the European Union.

Customs inspector Nadja Painokallio stated that the new functionality provides a clear and quick way for consumers to check common restrictions and prohibitions applicable to online purchases before placing an order. An example highlighted is the ban on ordering tobacco products, including nicotine pouches, into Finland, a crucial point that the calculator now highlights effectively. This aims to prevent accidental violations of customs laws by shoppers, enhancing compliance and safeguarding public health.

The customs calculator has been operational for some time, but the recent updates significantly bolster its utility in an increasingly digital shopping environment. As online shopping grows, ensuring proper understanding and navigation of customs regulations becomes paramount, facilitating legal compliance and promoting safer consumer habits in Finland.
