Finland's customs authority has introduced a significant update to its customs calculator, which now not only estimates customs and VAT charges for incoming goods but also alerts users to any restrictions or prohibitions associated with their purchases. This feature, implemented in February, is aimed at helping online shoppers ensure they abide by legal regulations when ordering items from outside the European Union.

Customs inspector Nadja Painokallio stated that the new functionality provides a clear and quick way for consumers to check common restrictions and prohibitions applicable to online purchases before placing an order. An example highlighted is the ban on ordering tobacco products, including nicotine pouches, into Finland, a crucial point that the calculator now highlights effectively. This aims to prevent accidental violations of customs laws by shoppers, enhancing compliance and safeguarding public health.
