Number of meningitis cases investigated in Kent rises to 20

The number of meningitis cases being investigated in Kent has increased to 20, according to the UK Health Security Agency.

Health officials in Kent are now investigating 20 cases of meningitis, an increase from 15 confirmed cases reported earlier. According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), nine of these cases have been laboratory-confirmed, with six identified as the meningitis B (MenB) strain. The rise in cases has raised concerns among health officials as they work to manage the outbreak effectively.

Trish Mannes, the UKHSA's regional deputy director for the south-east, noted that the affected individuals are primarily young adults, highlighting the vulnerability of this demographic to the disease. Additionally, a separate case involving a baby with confirmed meningococcal group B infection has been noted, though it is not linked to the outbreak currently being investigated. Health authorities are vigilant in monitoring such cases to prevent further infections.

In terms of response, approximately 2,500 doses of antibiotics have been administered to close contacts in the area, including individuals at the University of Kent. The UKHSA is urging anyone who may have come into contact with those affected to seek treatment promptly. By doing so, they hope to mitigate the risks of further transmission and contain the outbreak responsibly.
