‘Doenjang Blues’ Recognized in the Birthplace of Blues: Kim Ju-yeop Band
Kim Ju-yeop Band, the only Asian group to reach the semifinals at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, emphasizes enjoying music over competition.
Kim Ju-yeop, the leader of the Kim Ju-yeop Band, recently spoke about his experience at the International Blues Challenge held in Memphis, Tennessee, where they reached the semifinals, distinguishing themselves as the only Asian team in this highly competitive event. Instead of focusing solely on the results, he highlighted the fun of music, embodying a lighter, danceable style of blues that contrasts with the often dark and heavy nature of the genre. The competition featured nearly 160 bands from around the world, making their semifinals journey particularly significant for the Kim Ju-yeop Band.
During the initial performances, Kim faced skepticism from the audience, who questioned whether a band of East Asian musicians could genuinely represent the blues. However, as the performance progressed, audience engagement improved significantly, boosting his confidence. Despite not advancing to the finals, the experience of competing alongside seasoned musicians from the birthplace of blues has enriched his view on the genre. Kim expressed a desire for a broader interpretation of blues, embracing elements from various genres such as funk and jazz, which he found prevalent in the American blues scene.
Kim describes his musical style as a “jumble,” reflecting his diverse musical influences throughout his life, from heavy metal to jazz and ultimately blues. His eclectic approach, combined with his journey in the music scene, showcases a unique blend that resonates with his vision for a more vibrant and inclusive understanding of blues. This experience has not only validated his artistic direction but has also positioned him as a significant figure in the Korean blues scene, potentially influencing its evolution in the future.
