The Seimas Sends "Aušriečiai" to Hungary: Decision Influenced by J. Olek's Vote
The Lithuanian Seimas has approved a controversial trip to Hungary, prompted by a vote from J. Olek, despite opposition from various members.
The Lithuanian Parliament, known as the Seimas, has decided to send a delegation, referred to as 'Aušriečiai', to Hungary amidst significant opposition. The decision was reportedly influenced by the vote from MP J. Olek, who, along with social democrat Orinta Leiputė and 'Aušrietis' Raimondas Šukys, supported the mission. The trip has sparked controversy particularly because it coincides with a crucial election period in Hungary, raising questions about the appropriateness of involvement in foreign political events.
Opposition members and some parliament leaders expressed their concerns over the timing and implications of this trip. Notably, Vice Chair of the Seimas, Rasa Budbergytė, despite voicing her disagreement, abstained from voting, while conservative MP Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė and liberal Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen voted against it. Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė and Čmilytė-Nielsen highlighted that sending parliamentary members to participate in what is deemed a campaign event organized by Viktor Orbán contradicts the principles of parliamentary diplomacy, which traditionally seeks to avoid involvement in foreign elections.
Further complicating matters for the ruling party, the opposition criticized the request to finance travel expenses from funds allocated for parliamentary activities. This proposal raised ethical concerns, with opposition figures questioning whether it is appropriate to allocate taxpayer money for what they view as partisan activities during a sensitive time in another country's political landscape.
