A vehicle allegedly made contact with children walking to school and drove away, with two students reporting pain in Shiga
A vehicle reportedly struck two children as they were walking to school in Omihachiman, Shiga, leading to an investigation for hit-and-run.
On the morning of the 18th around 9:30 AM, a teacher at Kita-Sato Elementary School in Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, alerted the police after two students reported that a vehicle had made contact with them. According to the local authorities, 10 children were walking to school in a group when a dark-colored light vehicle passed by and brushed against them. Following their arrival at school, the students reported pain to their teacher; a fifth-grade boy indicated pain in his left arm, and a third-grade girl reported discomfort in her left shoulder.
The police are currently investigating the incident under suspicions of violating traffic laws concerning hit-and-run, as the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene. The touching contact seems to have caused concern among parents and school staff, highlighting the importance of road safety for children, particularly in residential neighborhoods where school commutes occur frequently.
This incident brings attention to the safety measures in place for student commutes in Japan, as schools typically organize safe walking routes and educate children on traffic awareness. Local authorities are expected to increase monitoring and possibly enhance safety protocols to ensure such incidents do not recur, emphasizing a community responsibility in safeguarding children.
