Poland extends border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October 1st
Poland has announced the extension of border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October 1st due to security concerns and illegal migration issues.
Poland's current border control laws, set to expire on April 4th, 2023, will now be extended for an additional six months until October 1st, 2023, according to a public document project. This extension is allowed under Schengen rules, which permit member states to reinstate checks at internal borders temporarily in response to foreseeable and serious threats to public order or internal security. The German government already made a similar decision earlier in the year due to rising concerns related to illegal migration.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk has linked the potential end of these border checks to Germany's decision and the pressing issues surrounding illegal immigration. The Polish government is particularly focused on the challenges posed by illegal migrants, particularly those coming from Belarus. Earlier this month, Warsaw also decided to maintain a buffer zone along its 400-kilometer border with Belarus until June 3rd due to ongoing migration pressures and increased incidents of cigarette smuggling from the neighboring country.
The illegal migration crisis is exacerbated by tactics employed by criminals, such as the use of hot air balloons to transport goods across borders. This situation reveals the complexities of border security in the region and the collaborative efforts required by neighboring countries to address these challenges effectively. Poland's extended border controls, therefore, represent a proactive measure in light of broader security concerns in the region and the ongoing issues of illegal migration and smuggling.
