Hunger strike for Radio Radicale, De Chirico and Nahum also join
Officials from Forza Italia and other parties have begun a hunger strike to protest funding cuts to Radio Radicale, a broadcaster that has been airing parliamentary sessions for decades.
In a coordinated effort to oppose funding cuts to Radio Radicale, various political figures have initiated a hunger strike, beginning with Forza Italia councilor Alessandro De Chirico. Radio Radicale, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year, has been instrumental in broadcasting parliamentary activity since 1979. The situation has sparked increasing concern among politicians who advocate for the continuation of the station's vital role in Italy's democratic process.
The hunger strike, organized by the Association for Radical Initiative 'Myrian Cazzavillan', began on March 6 with Francesco Monelli. The initiative has garnered support from various council members across political lines, highlighting a shared commitment to preserving the independence and funding of Radio Radicale. Both Alessandro Giungi from the Democratic Party and Gianmaria Radice from Italia Viva have previously participated in the strike, emphasizing the bipartisan nature of the appeal for funding support.
Gianni Rubagotti, secretary of the Radical Association, has reached out to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, urging the government to reconsider its stance on the funding cuts. Given that Radio Radicale has played a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability in Italy's governance, the outcome of this protest could have significant implications for the future of political journalism and public discourse in the country.
