Delays, energy costs, and exports: small and medium enterprises in crisis

Small and medium enterprises in Italy are facing significant challenges due to soaring energy costs, delivery delays, and decreasing demand, largely influenced by the ongoing Gulf war.

The Italian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are grappling with severe issues stemming from surging energy costs, delivery disruptions, and a decline in consumer demand, all traced back to the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. A study conducted by Confcommercio in Milan, Lodi, and Brianza surveyed 512 businesses within the tertiary sector, revealing that 75% are experiencing various negative impacts. The tourism sector stands out among the most affected areas, with a notable drop in visitors, while imports and exports are also feeling the strain, indicating a broader economic challenge.
