Three jailed, fined for Facebook, TikTok fraud in Kaduna
Three individuals have been sentenced to jail and fined for committing fraud through social media platforms in Kaduna State, Nigeria.
The Kaduna State High Court has convicted three individuals—Aliyu Hassan, Samuel Olamide, and Solomon Joseph Christian—for fraud conducted via social media channels, specifically Facebook and TikTok. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reported the convictions, emphasizing the need for vigilance against online fraud as perpetrators attempt to exploit victims using impersonation tactics. Each convict received a sentence for their actions, which included criminal impersonation and obtaining money under false pretenses.
On February 9, 2026, Hassan impersonated a Brazilian individual on Facebook and managed to defraud a victim for N90,000. Following this, Olamide impersonated a U.S. citizen on TikTok, successfully deceiving an American citizen. Christian employed a different alias for similar fraudulent activities. The case highlights the growing trend of digital fraud in Nigeria and the efforts of law enforcement to combat such crimes through legal action.
These convictions not only serve justice for the immediate victims but also send a strong message about the consequences of online fraud. The EFCC's involvement underscores the ongoing battle against cyber crime in Nigeria, urging citizens to be more cautious while engaging on social media platforms. The legal repercussions faced by these individuals may deter future fraudsters who might seek to engage in similar activities.
