Stubbs: Europe could help the USA in the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for support for Ukraine
Finnish President Alexander Stubb suggests that Europe could provide military assistance to the USA in securing the Strait of Hormuz in return for greater support for Ukraine.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has proposed that Europe could offer military aid to US President Donald Trump for the protection of the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for increased assistance for Ukraine. According to Politico, Stubb, who has a friendly relationship with Trump and knows he favors deals, believes a compromise could potentially address both the oil crisis in the Persian Gulf and the conflict in Ukraine simultaneously.
Stubb points out the possibility of granting Trump something he desires—military support for securing the vital oil transit route through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed due to Iran's blockade. He argues that any European military aid should be contingent upon the US President ensuring that Ukraine receives all necessary support to reach a sustainable peace agreement with Russia.
This trading idea was brought forward during a Q&A session at Chatham House in London, where Stubb expressed confidence in the proposal, stating, "I think it's a good idea. No, it's a very good idea." This assertion reflects a strategic thought process engaging in negotiations that could enhance both European security interests and bolster support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
