An alarming investigation by Yle Uutiset has uncovered that more than 70 well-known Finnish women, including politicians, athletes, musicians, actresses, and models, have been victims of AI-generated sexually explicit images. In these manipulated visuals, the women are depicted in various states of undress and participating in sexual activities, all generated through advanced deepfake technology. The investigation involved a thorough examination of a site that distributes a large volume of pornographic images and GIFs daily, with about 1,500 images featuring these notable figures being identified as deepfake creations.

This rise in digital violence against women is of significant concern, as the dissemination of non-consensual AI-generated nude images has been deemed illegal under new sexual crime legislation in Finland. Although individual politicians and public figures have previously reported incidents of deepfake technologies being used against them, the scale of the images collected in this study is unprecedented in Finland. The existence of such a vast number of manipulated images reflecting a growing trend of using technology for harassment brings forth serious implications for privacy, legality, and the safety of women in the digital space.

The investigation serves as a critical reminder of the challenges posed by evolving technologies that can be exploited for malevolent purposes.
