Chamber of Deputies approves committee to support victims and families of air accident victims
The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has approved the creation of a committee dedicated to assisting victims and their families of air accidents.
On October 17, 2023, the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies approved the establishment of a Cooperation Committee aimed at providing support to victims and families of air crash victims. This decision was driven by the need for organized responses from public agencies and private institutions following tragic incidents like the Voepass aircraft disaster in Vinhedo, São Paulo, which occurred in August 2024 and resulted in the death of all 62 people on board due to a suspected anti-ice system failure.
The draft law 5031/2024 was introduced by Federal Deputies Nelsinho Padovani (União/PR) and Bruno Ganem (Podemos/SP), who participated in an external committee investigating the circumstances surrounding the Voepass accident. The committee's main task will be to coordinate actions between various stakeholders to ensure prompt and efficient assistance to those affected by air accidents, reflecting a proactive legislative measure concerning aviation safety and victim support.
The proposal still requires Senate approval before it can be sanctioned by the President of Brazil. Should it be enacted, this law would establish a framework for cooperation among public and private entities, indicating the Brazilian government’s commitment to improving safety standards and support systems for victims of aviation disasters, setting a precedent for future legislative actions in air safety management.
