Mamata's Masterstroke... No Stars, No Glamor, Ticket Distribution Based on Performance
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has released the candidate list for the TMC for the 2026 assembly elections, focusing on leaders grounded in local politics rather than celebrity figures.
West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has officially unveiled the candidate list for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in anticipation of the 2026 assembly elections. The party is set to contest on 291 seats, while three seats have been allocated to their ally BGPM for the elections in the Darjeeling hills. Notable in this list is the TMC's strategic shift towards prioritizing candidates with strong grassroots connections, a move aimed at addressing public discontent that has surfaced after 15 years in power.
In a significant restructuring of their candidate selection, the TMC has opted to deny tickets to 74 sitting MLAs, and has altered the constituencies for 15 others. This move signals a clear strategy to combat anti-incumbency sentiments and re-energize the party's image ahead of the crucial elections. Among those dropped are several prominent figures, including former minister Partha Chatterjee, who is currently imprisoned, as well as well-known personalities from sports and entertainment.
Contrary to its historical trend of nominating film celebrities, this election cycle sees the TMC eschewing new film faces. Instead, it has chosen to back veteran actors and current MLAs, signaling a commitment to proven leadership over star power. This shift underscores the TMC's recognition of the changing electoral landscape in West Bengal, focusing on performance and accountability rather than superficial fame to win voter confidence.
