Brazil achieved its lowest infant mortality rate in 34 years in 2024, yet the decline has slowed in recent years according to a new report.
In 2024, Brazil recorded the lowest rate of infant mortality in the last 34 years, as reported by the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimates (UN IGME). In 1990, out of every 1,000 live births, 25 infants died before reaching 28 days, but this figure has drastically decreased to just seven in 2024. Similarly, the mortality rate for children aged 1 to 59 months has also significantly dropped from 38 deaths per 1,000 in 1990 to seven deaths per 1,000 in 2024, indicating substantial progress in child healthcare over the decades.
