The scam of the unfinished ghost construction in Alcalá extends to several communities of neighbors in Madrid and Guadalajara
A construction scam has reportedly affected multiple residential communities in Spain, after a company promoting European aid for building renovations allegedly disappeared with hundreds of thousands of euros.
The recent discovery by the Spanish newspaper El Mundo that a construction scam has been perpetrated against a community of residents in Alcalá de Henares raises concerns that this is just the tip of the iceberg. At least six other residential communities across various municipalities like San Sebastián de los Reyes, Torrejón de Ardoz, Guadalajara, and Madrid have come forward claiming victimhood at the hands of the same company, which was supposedly managing European funds for building renovations before vanishing with large sums of money. Many of these communities engaged in projects financed through bank loans and European grants that either never started or were left incomplete.
Sylvia Córdoba, a lawyer who is currently compiling these cases, has indicated that her office has already been contacted by various communities from affected areas. Particularly alarming is the report of two communities in San Sebastián de los Reyes that have been identified thus far, with the potential for more complaints to surface as more victims come forward. The implications of this scam are far-reaching, not only leaving residents in a precarious housing situation but also raising questions about oversight and accountability in the management of public funds intended for housing improvements.
As investigations continue, affected communities are likely to seek legal recourse against the company in question, which poses challenges given the significant financial losses involved. The situation highlights a broader issue of trust and security in the construction sector, especially when European aid is implicated, and it calls for stronger regulatory measures to protect citizens from fraudulent schemes in the future.
