Mercosur: Paraguay ratifies the trade agreement with the European Union

Paraguay has unanimously ratified a trade agreement with the European Union, finalizing its role in the world's largest free trade zone established by Mercosur and the EU.

Paraguay's Chamber of Deputies unanimously voted to ratify a significant trade agreement with the European Union, marking the completion of the legislative process for the country within the Mercosur bloc. This agreement not only strengthens Paraguay's economic ties with Europe but also reinforces the cohesion of the Mercosur bloc, comprised of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, which had previously ratified the agreement in the weeks leading up to Paraguay's decision. The deal, which had taken 25 years to negotiate, creates the largest free trade zone in the world between the 27 EU member states and the Mercosur founding countries, heralding new opportunities for trade and commerce.

The ratification process had been a pivotal step for Paraguay, ensuring that it could benefit from the trade advantages outlined in the agreement. The support from all members of the Chamber of Deputies reflects a consensus on the potential economic benefits that could arise from enhanced trade relations with the EU. This agreement is expected to boost both agricultural exports and industrial products from Paraguay, fundamentally impacting the economy and opening doors for future international trade projects.

As the last country in the Mercosur bloc to apply its signature to this agreement, Paraguay’s ratification encapsulates a historic moment for regional trade in South America. The collective move towards free trade emphasizes the importance of international partnerships, positioning Mercosur as a significant player on the global economic stage. The agreement will likely enhance economic collaboration and lead to a strengthened economic relationship between Europe and South America, promoting growth and development across both regions.
