Ministry of Finance Calls States to Discuss Temporary Reduction of ICMS on Diesel This Wednesday

The Brazilian Ministry of Finance has called a meeting with the states to discuss a temporary reduction of the ICMS tax on diesel.

The Brazilian Ministry of Finance has organized a meeting for Wednesday, the 18th, with all state finance secretaries to discuss a proposed temporary reduction of the ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) levied on diesel fuel. This meeting is part of the activities of the Confaz (National Council of Tax Policy), which is responsible for issues relating to the ICMS, including setting the tax rates on various goods, particularly fuels. The urgency of addressing this tax reduction stems from current economic pressures and the need to stabilize fuel prices for consumers.

The official announcement regarding the meeting was made on Monday, the 16th, and it was signed by Carlos Henrique de Azevedo Oliveira, the executive secretary of Confaz. He indicated that the request for this meeting was made by Dario Durigan, the executive secretary of the Ministry of Finance and the council's president. This 421st Extraordinary Meeting is focused on bringing together state leaders to evaluate and potentially agree on reducing the tax rate amid rising costs and public discontent over fuel prices.

This initiative reflects the Brazilian government's ongoing efforts to address economic challenges, particularly those affecting the transportation sector and general consumer costs. A temporary reduction in the ICMS on diesel could provide relief for both consumers and businesses that rely heavily on diesel for transportation and logistics, but it raises questions about tax revenues for the states, which rely on the ICMS for funding public services.
