Lieutenant Colonel Renata Guedes Rodrigues Lannes has made history by becoming the first woman to command the 8th Military Police Battalion in Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil.
Lieutenant Colonel Renata Guedes Rodrigues Lannes has officially taken command of the 8th Military Police Battalion (8th BPM) in Campos dos Goytacazes, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to hold this position in the battalion's history. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at the battalion headquarters and was attended by various dignitaries, including the city’s vice-mayor Frederico Paes and the mayor of São João da Barra, Carla Caputi. This event signifies not only a personal achievement for Guedes but also an important step for gender representation in the police force within the region.
As the new commander, Lieutenant Colonel Guedes will oversee policing operations in four municipalities: Campos dos Goytacazes, São João da Barra, São Francisco de Itabapoana, and São Fidélis. Her predecessor, Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Barbosa, had been in charge since 2024 and will be succeeded by Guedes as part of the ongoing leadership transition within the battalion. In her inaugural speech, Guedes emphasized the responsibilities of her new role and expressed her commitment to enhancing the police work already established in the region, aiming to ensure community safety and security.
This leadership change is particularly significant in the context of increasing calls for diversity and inclusion within law enforcement agencies globally. By assuming command of the 8th BPM, Guedes not only serves as a role model for aspiring female leaders in the military and police sectors but also indicates a progressive shift in institutional culture. It remains to be seen how her leadership will impact the effectiveness and dynamics of the police force in the region, especially as it navigates the diverse needs of the communities it serves.
