Forest fire in Norway - 450 evacuated
A forest fire on the slopes of Mount Sukkertoppen near Ålesund, Norway, has led to the evacuation of 450 people, with the fire still not under control as of late Tuesday evening.
A significant forest fire is currently raging on the slopes of Mount Sukkertoppen near the city of Ålesund in Norway. As reported by NRK, approximately 450 individuals have been evacuated from the affected area as firefighting efforts are hampered by ongoing strong winds and the fire remains uncontrolled. The blaze began at around 2 PM local time on Tuesday and firefighting teams were dispatched quickly; however, by 10 PM, they were still working to bring the situation under control.
The local fire service is actively spraying cold water on structures in the city to prevent radiant heat damage due to the intense heat generated by the fire, which is exacerbated by windy conditions. Sindre Kongshaug, a duty officer at the alarm center, highlighted the risks associated with fire embers due to the weather conditions. Despite efforts from the firefighters, they anticipate that the fire will not diminish in intensity in the coming hours, indicating a prolonged fight against the flames.
Officials, including Kjartan Molvaer from the Ålesund fire department, have indicated that the firefighting operations could extend for several more hours, suggesting that the situation could remain critical. The expected slight decrease in wind strength may provide some relief, but the immediate outlook is concerning as firefighters continue to battle the blaze in challenging conditions.
