House of Poveiros is shut down after roof collapse; Civil Defense sees risk of further collapses
The House of Poveiros in Rio de Janeiro has been completely shut down by municipal authorities after part of its roof collapsed, posing a risk of further structural failures.
On Tuesday, municipal Civil Defense authorities fully shuttered the House of Poveiros located in the Rio Comprido neighborhood of North Rio after a significant portion of the roof collapsed the previous day. The inspection revealed that the partial roof failure endangered the overall structure, as various elements had ruptured, leading to concerns of additional collapses involving sections of the roof and walls.
As a precautionary measure, the premises will remain closed until essential repairs are completed and the building's stability is ensured. Owners have been instructed to undertake necessary structural interventions to rectify the issues. The property, positioned at Rua do Bispo, number 302, is home to a long-standing club that boasts nearly a century of history in the area, making the situation particularly impactful for the local community.
Additionally, the Municipal Secretariat for Urban Development and Licensing (SMDU) has initiated an emergency license process and has urged the property owners to engage with the officials to address the situation. The development underscores the urgent need for structural assessments in older buildings, especially those with considerable historical significance, to prevent potential hazards in urban areas.
