There is no innovation without a bubble... we must take the AI bubble as an opportunity for leapfrogging

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing significant changes across various sectors, necessitating comprehensive responses from the government and society.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing at an unprecedented pace, impacting economic, social, and cultural domains as well as military and security areas. The scene evokes memories of the Second Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century, which transformed human society on all levels based on electrical technology. The ongoing conversation emphasizes the need for AI policies that go beyond mere technological considerations, calling for a holistic approach that includes industrial, societal, military, and security responses. A recent meeting with Hong Jeong-woo, the Chief of AI Future Planning at the Blue House, clarified the government's strategy regarding AI and its implementation across various sectors.

Hong Jeong-woo, who holds a PhD in Computer Engineering from Seoul National University and has significant experience in the AI sector, including at Naver, highlighted the rapid growth of generative AI, stating that some have reached a level comparable to 'Artificial General Intelligence' (AGI) and exhibit human-level capabilities in daily applications. He commented on the recently enacted AI action plan by the Lee Jae-myung government, noting that it broadly encompasses key components like infrastructure, industry, public policy, technology, society, and global engagements. However, he indicated that there remain critical discussions on how to design the redistribution of wealth and value created by growth without employment, suggesting ongoing societal dialogues on this complex issue.

Regarding the current AI investment bubble debate, Hong asserted that 'there is no innovation without a bubble,' underlining the potential of leveraging the existing bubble as an opportunity for significant advancement. His core mission as the AI Future Planning Chief is focused on securing future growth engines through advancements across essential scientific and technological sectors, thereby enhancing national competitiveness in energy, semiconductors, mobility, shipbuilding, nuclear energy, and space exploration. This strategic framing indicates a recognition of the interconnected nature of these fields and the strategic importance of AI as a cornerstone for future innovations and economic stability.
