Man who ripped off hijab and assaulted Muslim women in mall is banned from approaching mosque in PR

A man has been prohibited from approaching a mosque in Paraná after being charged with assaulting two Muslim women in a mall, following a history of violent behavior towards the Islamic community.

Augusto César Vieira, 33, has been ordered by the court to stay at least 300 meters away from the Islamic Mosque in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, following his recent violent actions towards two Muslim women. This court decision comes after he violently ripped off the hijab of one of the women and physically assaulted both victims inside a mall. If he fails to comply with this order, he faces a fine of R$ 2,500 and is currently detained in the local jail while awaiting further judicial proceedings.

The judicial ruling takes into account a series of prior incidents where Vieira has demonstrated violent and aggressive behavior toward the mosque and its members. Notably, he has a troubling history that includes physically assaulting a man inside the mosque in 2018, invading the mosque armed with a knife in 2024, and verbally attacking the president of the local Islamic cultural center in 2025. These actions contributed to the court's decision to impose restraining measures intended to protect the mosque's congregation from possible future attacks.

The decision reflects the serious nature of hate crimes and the necessity for protective measures in communities facing discrimination and violence. As incidents of Islamophobia rise, this case underscores the need for law enforcement and judicial systems to take decisive action against perpetrators of such acts, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding communal harmony and protecting vulnerable groups from targeted attacks.
