[Exclusive] Kitchen Robots Serving School Lunch Workers... "53 Units Deployed Nationwide, but Effectiveness Not Felt"
School cafeteria workers express dissatisfaction with the effectiveness of newly introduced kitchen robots, which were intended to reduce labor intensity but have not significantly improved their working conditions.
In an effort to alleviate the burden on school cafeteria workers and enhance cooking conditions, various regional education offices in South Korea have implemented kitchen robots in school lunch programs. Despite a nationwide deployment of 53 robots in 48 schools across 10 education offices, many cafeteria workers report a lack of significant improvement in their work environments. The robots, costing over 100 million KRW each, are expected to reduce workload and address health issues among employees, but practical feedback suggests that the anticipated benefits have not materialized. Workers have voiced concerns about the robots not guaranteeing their safety or health, with reports of unchanged labor intensity.
One school cook expressed skepticism about the robots' impact, noting that while the robotic arm assists in stirring, the energy saved is redirected towards other tasks, particularly cleaning. Another worker pointed out that synchronizing work with the robots has extended their working hours, resulting in reduced break times. Furthermore, critiques have been raised regarding the robots' cost-effectiveness; while the robots represent a significant investment, their functionality is reportedly limited. The types of dishes that can be prepared using the robots are restricted, and some functionalities remain underutilized, highlighting the discrepancy between intended and actual utility.
Overall, the implementation of kitchen robots in South Korean schools appears to have fallen short of expectations, questioning the validity of the considerable financial investment made by the education authorities. As workers continue to voice their concerns regarding the robots' effectiveness in improving labor conditions, calls for a thorough evaluation of their impact and further discussions on how to genuinely enhance the working environment for cafeteria staff are essential.
