Civil Police warns of scams against victims of the floods in Juiz de Fora; criminals promise to expedite R$ 200,000 aid
The Civil Police of Brazil has warned about scammers exploiting the vulnerabilities of families affected by recent floods in Juiz de Fora, offering false financial aid.
The Civil Police of Brazil alerted the public about increasing scams targeting families who have suffered greatly due to recent floods in Juiz de Fora. This tragic event resulted in the loss of 65 lives, displaced over 8,880 individuals, and destroyed more than 1,000 homes. In light of the devastation, scammers are taking advantage of the vulnerable situation by making fraudulent claims about a R$ 200,000 housing assistance being offered to the victims.
These criminals adopt various deceptive tactics to exploit their victims. In one method, they pose as false lawyers offering to file a 'collective action' on behalf of the flood victims to secure the promised financial aid, demanding an upfront fee of R$ 1,000. In another approach, potential victims receive unsolicited text messages informing them they have been 'selected' to receive aid, further enhancing the likelihood of them falling victim to these scams.
With a significant increase in reports regarding these fraudulent activities, the Civil Police urges the public to be vigilant and cautious of any unsolicited offers for financial assistance during this distressing time. They emphasize the importance of verifying information through official channels and warn that these scams could lead to further financial loss for those already impacted by the disaster.
