Furious clubs 'contact Premier League bosses' after Chelsea avoid points deduction

Premier League clubs expressed outrage after Chelsea escaped a points deduction despite being fined for undisclosed payments relating to player transfers.

Chelsea FC has been fined £10.75 million by the Premier League for making undisclosed payments associated with player transfers between 2011 and 2018. Though found guilty of secret financial transactions amounting to £47 million, the club avoided a points deduction, a decision that has left many other Premier League clubs feeling stunned and infuriated. This fine marks the largest ever imposed for such infractions, nearly double the previous record set with West Ham in 2007.

The ruling was reached after an investigation revealed that Chelsea engaged in making undeclared payments to players, unregistered agents, and other third parties over several years. In addition to the monetary fine, Chelsea received a one-year transfer ban, which has been suspended for two years, alongside a nine-month prohibition on registering academy players. These penalties are significant yet many believe they do not adequately reflect the severity of the infractions.

Reaction from the league is robust, with reports indicating that several clubs have reached out to Premier League officials expressing their disbelief and dissatisfaction with the outcome. The disparity between the financial penalties and the absence of a points deduction raises questions about the enforcement of rules and fair competition within the league. This incident could potentially lead to further scrutiny of financial regulations in the Premier League and intensify discussions on the integrity of the rules governing club finances in professional football.
