Trump 'returns' visa to Gustavo Petro, President of Colombia: 'It was returned to me until the end of my term'

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that the U.S. government has reinstated his visa until the end of his term, after it was revoked in September 2025.

Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, stated that as of March 17, 2023, the United States has reactivated his visa until the conclusion of his presidential term on August 7, 2023. Petro expressed relief over this decision through a post on X, recognizing the significance of holding a valid visa as head of state. Although the visa was canceled previously in September 2025, he conveyed confidence in his diplomatic status and the benefits of improved relations with the U.S.

The reinstatement of Petro's visa is particularly noteworthy considering he was previously listed on the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in what is known as the 'Clinton List.' This inclusion followed accusations made by former President Donald Trump labeling him as a 'drug trafficking leader.' Petro's mention of wanting his name removed from this list suggests heightened political stakes and the ongoing dynamics in U.S.-Colombian relations.

This development is a pivotal moment for Petro's presidency as it potentially eases diplomatic tensions and could open avenues for increased cooperation with the United States. It reflects not only Petro's emphasis on restoring dignity but also a commitment to addressing broader issues of bilateral importance, such as drug policy and human rights, amidst a region increasingly seeking to redefine its relationship with the U.S. under new dynamics.
