Trump postpones his visit to China

US President Donald Trump announced he will travel to China in five or six weeks, delaying his original plans.

US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday evening Finnish time that he plans to travel to China in approximately five or six weeks, postponing his initial schedule to visit in late March or early April. This delay follows a request made by Trump to postpone a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping that was originally set for the end of the month by about a month. Previously, in an interview with the Financial Times, Trump had suggested that he expected China to assist the United States in re-opening the Strait of Hormuz, but this condition was not mentioned in his announcement regarding the postponement. The Chinese Foreign Ministry took note of Trump's publicly clarified reasons for the delay and showed acceptance of his request, with their spokesperson stating that media reports on the delay were inaccurately depicted. Additionally, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent retracted statements made by Trump during a newspaper interview on Monday. Bessent clarified that linking the visit to demands regarding the re-opening of the waterway was not truthful, indicating a potential misalignment in the administration's communication strategies regarding foreign diplomatic engagements.
