EU Chair: We Must Talk to Russia

EU Council President António Costa indicates a need to engage with Russia in the future while expressing hope that Hungary will cease blocking EU loans to Ukraine.

In a recent interview, António Costa, President of the European Council, emphasized the importance of dialogue with Russia, albeit suggesting that the timing is not right for such discussions. This statement comes ahead of another critical summit in Brussels, where significant decisions regarding EU financial support for Ukraine are expected to be made. Costa expressed optimism that Hungary would eventually relent in its opposition to the EU's plans, particularly regarding a €90 billion loan that was approved by EU leaders during their December summit.

Costa condemned any unilateral withdrawal from agreements previously made with EU member states, specifically targeting Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He asserted that it would be 'completely unacceptable' for Hungary to reject the collective decision made by EU leaders. Costa's insistence reflects a broader concern about maintaining unity among EU members, especially in light of external pressures and internal conflicts that could undermine their collective response to issues such as the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

The comments made by Costa highlight the delicate balance the EU must strike in both supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia and maintaining internal cohesion among member states. As the EU prepares for crucial discussions on its support framework for Ukraine, the involvement of Hungary presents both a significant challenge and a test of the EU’s political resolve. The continuation of open dialogue and the pressure for consensus will be critical as the EU navigates these complex geopolitical waters.
