Healthcare in a 48-hour strike: Doctors and nurses on the streets

Doctors and nurses in Greece are set to go on strike to demand better pay and working conditions, starting March 18, with further actions planned for March 19.

In Greece, public healthcare doctors will participate in a nationwide strike on March 18, following a decision by the Federation of Hospital Doctors' Unions of Greece (OENGE). A rally is scheduled at noon in front of the Ministry of Health, as healthcare professionals come together to voice their concerns. Following this, the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers (POEDIN) has called for a 24-hour nationwide strike on March 19, with specific working stoppages in Attica from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, alongside a full-day strike in other regions, emphasizing the critical situation of Greece's healthcare system.

The striking doctors and nurses are demanding resolution on economic and institutional issues that affect their work conditions. The OENGE has stated their intentions to escalate their fight for meaningful salary increases, the hiring of permanent doctors, and humane working hours. This action highlights ongoing frustrations within the healthcare sector, reflecting broader issues concerning public sector infrastructure and labor rights in Greece.

As the strikes unfold, they present significant implications not only for healthcare services but also for public health in general. Hospitals may face shortages of medical personnel, potentially impacting patient care. Additionally, this strike could bring attention to the need for reforms and investments in Greece’s healthcare system, positioning healthcare workers' demands at the forefront of national discourse regarding public services and workers' rights.
