Vitamin deficiency exacerbates symptoms of anxiety and depression

A recent discussion by mental health professionals highlights the significant link between vitamin D deficiency and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Mental health issues have risen sharply among both children and adults in recent years, prompting increased discussions about treatment methods. Psychiatrist Dr. Mari Järvelaid and SYNLAB Estonia's laboratory physician Anneli Raave-Sepp emphasize that mental health cannot be evaluated in isolation from the rest of the body. One key factor in this holistic picture is vitamin D, which plays a critical role in the functioning of the nervous system and maintaining mood.

Dr. Järvelaid points out that the evaluation of attention disorders, anxiety, and mood disorders must begin with a comprehensive assessment of the body's overall condition. While many mental health disorders have a neurobiological basis, their symptoms—such as fatigue, concentration difficulties, irritability, and low mood—may actually be due to deficiencies in vitamins and minerals rather than solely psychiatric conditions.

This overlapping of symptoms can make diagnostics challenging. The same clinical presentation may indicate either a mental health disorder or deficiencies in vital nutrients like vitamin D, vitamin B12, or iron. Therefore, blood tests become essential for diagnosing mental health issues, ensuring that treatment approaches address both psychological and nutritional factors for comprehensive care.
