Gustav Suits Poetry Award Presented to Emotionally Impactful Poetry Collection

On March 17th, at the Estonian Literary Museum, Tartu Mayor Urmas Klaas announced the laureate of this year’s Gustav Suits Poetry Award, which was awarded to Carolina Pihelgas for her collection titled 'Still.' Jury member Piret Põldver noted that the poetry collection is emotionally impactful and demonstrates a high level of professionalism and conscious form. The ceremony began with welcoming remarks from the director of the Estonian Literary Museum, Piret Voolaid. Language expert Helle Metslang, along with colleague Jaana Toome, introduced learning material focused on Kristian Jaak Peterson as part of the event. Furthermore, Saara Liis Jõerand, the editor of 'Värske Rõhk,' delivered a presentation on Gustav Suits and young literature, showcasing the connection between past and contemporary literary achievements. Piret Põldver spoke on behalf of the award committee, followed by Mayor Urmas Klaas presenting the Gustav Suits Poetry Award. The new laureate, Carolina Pihelgas, delivered a thank-you speech and read her poetry. Musical interludes were performed by students from the Elleri School, enriching the celebratory atmosphere of the event and highlighting the importance of poetry in contemporary Estonian culture.
