German Olympic Bid: Hamburg Plans Floating Venues on the Alster
Hamburg is proposing to host the Olympics with floating venues on the Alster as part of a joint bid with Schleswig-Holstein for the Olympic Games and Paralympics in 2036, 2040, or 2044.
Hamburg's First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher, advocates for the city as the ideal location to embody the Olympic spirit in Germany. He expressed hope for financial support from the federal government while drawing inspiration from the upcoming Paris Olympics. Tschentscher emphasized that Hamburg can write a new chapter in its history, characterized by internationality, diversity, and peaceful coexistence among nations.
However, the prospect of hosting the Olympics in Germany as early as 2036 has been met with skepticism. Andy Grote, Hamburg's Interior Senator, described the idea as 'extremely unrealistic', suggesting that the timeline may be too ambitious. Despite this uncertainty, the city, along with Schleswig-Holstein, has formally submitted a bid for the potential Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044, indicating a longer-term vision for Olympic participation.
This initiative not only aims to enhance Hamburg's international profile but also seeks to leverage the Olympic brand to promote economic and infrastructural development. Through this bid, the city hopes to embrace the globally recognized Olympic values while contributing to the dialogue about Olympic hosting in Germany, potentially influencing future bids and events in the region.
