"No" from Doukas-Christodoulakis on coalition government with ND

Both the Mayor of Athens and a PASOK MP oppose a coalition government with the New Democracy party.

Two days after the internal party process for the election of delegates and ten days before the Congress of PASOK-Kinal, both Athens Mayor Haris Doukas and PASOK MP Manolis Christodoulakis have taken a firm stance against a coalition government with New Democracy. They made their positions clear through social media posts, emphasizing their belief that New Democracy is the party's main opponent, regardless of its leader. Christodoulakis particularly stated that any co-governance with right-wing entities would dilute the political identity of PASOK.

In his statement, Christodoulakis highlighted the fundamental dilemma facing PASOK: what kind of party it wants to be moving forward. He stressed that the essence of PASOK should not be compromised by forming alliances that could undermine its leftist stance. His comments indicate a broader debate within PASOK about its alignment and strategy in an evolving political landscape in Greece, particularly in light of pressures from other political parties.

The stance taken by these prominent figures suggests a potential rift within the party, as it heads into a critical period at its upcoming Congress. Their refusal to entertain a coalition with New Democracy may resonate with a segment of the PASOK base that values its independence and historical positioning as a left-leaning alternative in Greek politics. This could have significant implications for the party's strategies and alliances in future elections, especially as it seeks to redefine itself in a competitive environment.
