Citizen Cooperative: Assisted Living in Citizens' Hands
A group of Marzling council members aims to develop a community-driven assisted living project on a municipal property.
In winter 2024, four community council members from Marzling held a brainstorming session after a council meeting where they decided to sell a municipal property to replenish community funds. They were concerned that the property might fall into the hands of private investors looking for profit. Council member Thomas Sellmeir expressed their desire to involve the community in purchasing the land and developing it collaboratively, which led to their initiative to create assisted living spaces designed for community use.
The result of their discussions has materialized into the "Assisted Living in Marzling" project, which plans to construct around 35 housing units specifically for local residents. This initiative emphasizes citizen participation in not only the development but also the management of the facility, ensuring that it serves the community's needs effectively. If all goes to plan, the construction is set to begin by the end of 2026, marking a significant step towards inclusive local development.
The journey to realize this project has encountered challenges, yet the commitment of these council members and the engaged citizens of Marzling illustrate a proactive approach to community welfare, prioritizing collective benefit over private profit. This model could serve as an inspiration for other towns facing similar situations regarding municipal property and community services.
