Vivian Motzfeldt leaves Siumut after government exit

Former Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt has left the Siumut party following its exit from the government last week.

Vivian Motzfeldt, the former minister for foreign affairs in Greenland, has decided to leave the Siumut party after it withdrew from the government coalition. According to reports from KNR and Sermitsiaq, Motzfeldt expressed her concerns, stating that she cannot be part of a party that 'excludes itself.' She emphasized that her political involvement is aimed at making an impactful contribution to society, and she sees no purpose in continuing on the current path taken by the party.

As a result of Motzfeldt's departure, Siumut will also lose a seat in the Inatsisartut, Greenland's parliament, which reduces the party's representation to just three seats. This decline is significant, especially considering that Siumut had already suffered a loss in the March 2022 parliamentary election, where it lost six out of ten seats. The party's decision to join a government coalition after the election came amid pressures related to U.S. President Donald Trump's previous comments about Greenland, which added further complexity to the political landscape in the territory.

Motzfeldt's departure from Siumut raises questions about the future direction of the party and its ability to regain influence in the Greenlandic parliament. With diminishing representation and the loss of experienced members like Motzfeldt, Siumut faces challenges ahead in addressing issues critical to Greenland, particularly in the face of external influences and domestic political dynamics. The situation highlights the ongoing shifts in Greenland's political climate and the implications it may have for governance and representation in the region.
