The architectural competition for the Tallinn City Museum's open storage facility won by the design "Sissevaade"

The architectural design "Sissevaade" by Kavakava OÜ has won the Tallinna City Museum's open storage facility competition, which aims to make more of the museum's collections accessible to the public.

The architectural competition for the Tallinn City Museum's open storage facility was successfully concluded with the design titled "Sissevaade" by the architectural firm Kavakava OÜ emerging as the winner. The team behind this design includes architects Siiri Vallner, Indrek Peil, and Ko Ai. Their proposal aligns with the city's vision of enhancing public access to the city's history by consolidating various hidden collections into a modern facility.

According to Monika Haukanõmm, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Sports, the Open Collections concept aims to bridge the gap between the museum's extensive vault and the public. Currently, only three percent of the Tallinn City Museum’s collections are on display; the new open storage is projected to increase this figure to 60 percent. This facility will not only showcase a larger variety of the museum's assets but will also illustrate important practices in conservation and restoration.

The planned facility will occupy over 12,000 square meters along the Cultural Kilometer, fulfilling both aesthetic and functional needs for urban development. The initiative reflects a significant step towards modernizing the museum environment, enhancing cultural engagement with the city's heritage, and making a broader array of its historical resources available to visitors and researchers alike.
