195 countries under one sky: How astronomy unites the world?
A global initiative named "Equal Day" emphasizes how astronomy can unite humanity beyond borders and differences by promoting a shared understanding of the cosmos.
Astronomy, considered one of the oldest sciences, has always inspired humanity to look beyond its divisions and limitations. It teaches us that we are all part of the same vast universe, revolving around a single shared star, the Sun, on a precious little planet called Earth. This universal perspective connects humanity with a much larger narrative, transcending geography, cultures, and beliefs.
In a clear night in 2025, during an event organized by the Mediterranean workshop of the "Shaw" initiative and the International Astronomical Union in Turkey, participants gazed up at the starry sky, each light whispering ancient stories of cosmic unity. It was at that moment that the realization dawned that astronomy is not just about star gazing, but serves as a message of peace and equality that can bring people together despite their differences. Thus, the global initiative was born.
The initiative named "Equal Day" was proposed by the national coordinator for astronomy education in Lebanon, emphasizing the importance of celestial studies in fostering unity and understanding among nations. By promoting collaborative efforts in astronomy education among 195 countries, the project aims to underline a shared human experience, reminding us that we are all part of the same universal journey, capable of breaking down barriers and fostering peace through scientific inquiry and outreach.
